Established by UNESCO in 1966 and first celebrated in 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) mobilizes the global community every year on September 8 around a shared belief: Literacy is both a human right and a foundation for dignity.
This belief is at the heart of ILA’s Children’s Rights to Read initiative, founded on 10 fundamental rights every child deserves. We invite you to celebrate the power of reading—and the children who deserve the right to read—by making reading a daily, shared experience. And we can help.
