Literacy Month 2025

Every child. Every book. Every right.

International Literacy Day (ILD), observed annually on September 8, was established by UNESCO in 1967 to remind the world that literacy is both a human right and a foundation for dignity.

This year, we invite you to celebrate the power of reading all month long—because every page has a purpose, and behind each one is a child who deserves the right to read it. This belief is at the heart of ILA’s Children’s Rights to Read initiative, founded on 10 fundamental rights every child deserves.

NEW FOR 2025: Literacy Month Toolkit

Make reading a joyful part of everyday life with the Literacy Month Toolkit. This free resource is packed with family-friendly reading activities, weekly themes, and daily prompts designed to engage kids of all ages.

From quick ideas you can do at home to creative ways to read together, the Toolkit makes it simple—and fun—to celebrate reading all month long.

We’ve created additional resources for families and caregivers:

Teachers: Support Joyful Literacy Experiences Beyond the Classroom

Educators are essential partners in helping families make reading a shared experience. Share these resources with caregivers and your school community to strengthen the bridge between classroom learning and family reading traditions.
